Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of heating temperature on the fatigue lifetime and grain area of ASTM A36 steel. Specimens were heated at 600 °C, 650 °C, and 700 °C for 7 hours, then cooled in open air to room temperature and left undisturbed for 7 days. Fatigue tests were conducted using the rotary bending method, and microstructures were examined using an optical microscope. Grain area was measured using ImageJ and analyzed using Origin. The average number of cycles to failure decreased from 1,237,091 cycles for the raw material to 142,064 cycles, 86,639 cycles, and 69,296 cycles after heating at 600 °C, 650 °C, and 700 °C, respectively. Conversely, grain area increased from 7,071.828 µm² to 11,420.762 µm², 18,605.091 µm², and 38,990.618 µm², respectively. These results indicate that higher heating temperatures were associated with increased grain area and reduced fatigue lifetime.
